RPA (Robotic Process Automation) is relatively new in terms of successful deployment, but the concept is decades old. Why have repetitive and low-value tasks completed by human beings? Human beings get tired, make mistakes, and need breaks. With the advent of robotics, such low-value tasks can be completed much quicker, with improved accuracy, all while operating 24/7.

What is RPA?

Let’s break it down…

  • Robotic – replicate or mimic human actions
  • Process – a series of actions
  • Automation – minimal or no human intervention

So essentially, RPA replicates a series of human actions, with minimal or no human input.

With pressure on leaders to find efficiencies, RPA can free up human efforts, so they can be directed to more value-add activities. Operations where RPA could be deployed include:

  • Collecting, checking and validating data
  • Direct mail
  • High volume / repetitive tasks
  • Decisioning
  • Reporting
  • Reducing gaps between systems
  • Cross-checking data
  • Migration of data

However, the use of RPA comes with a note of caution. As outlined in our blog Don’t automate your problems – getting results from RPA in banking operations, RPA won’t fix outdated, inefficient or unnecessary processes.

When used effectively, RPA can dramatically increase efficiency in repetitive, business-critical processes, whilst ensuring excellent levels of accuracy.
